History of CBD

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]CBD is popular just about everywhere lately, however, it’s been around and used for medical purposes long before today. You may be surprised to learn how long ago research began regarding the potential health benefits of CBD and other cannabinoids. Scroll through the timeline or watch the video below to learn more about the history of CBD.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

  • 1550 BC – The Ebers Papyrus from Egypt describes the use of medical cannabis, marking the beginning of the history of CBD (that we know of)
  • 1940 – Roger Adams isolates CBD from marijuana – but doesn’t really know what he’s found. He spent years researching the chemistry of the marijuana plant and separated CBD as an isolated chemical compound, but it was many years until other researchers realized that was he had extracted was in fact CBD.
  • 1946 – Dr. Walter S. Loewe conducts the first CBD tests on lab animals. His experiments showed that CBD appeared to produce no observable effects on the behavior of mice – unlike THC.
  • In 1963, Professor Raphael Mechoulam uncovers the chemical structure of CBD. Although Adams was technically the first to isolate CBD, Mechoulam was the first to describe the chemical structure.
  • Mid-1970’s – A cannabis tincture is released for medicinal use in England after news of Professor Mechoulam’s findings and the potential benefits of CBD begin to spread.
  • 1978 – New Mexico becomes the first US state to legally acknowledge cannabis as a medicine.
  • February 1980 – Professor Mechoulam and South American researchers publish study on cannabis and epilepsy. The team conducted a study on 16 people who suffered from severe epilepsy. Each of the subjects who received CBD showed improvement in their condition – this study became one of the most significant breakthroughs in marijuana research. But, it was mostly ignored at the time of publication due to the stigma surrounding cannabis.
  • 1996 – California becomes the first state to legalize medical marijuana!
  • 1998 – GW Pharmaceuticals starts making medicines with THC and CBD and performing clinical trials for CBD’s effectiveness against epilepsy, glioma, and schizophrenia among others.
  • October 7, 2003 – The US government patents CBD as a neuroprotectant. This patent was a great step toward national acknowledgement of CBD as medicine.
  • 2014 – Several states pass legislation on the legalization of CBD. Legalization of medical CBD in Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin marked important moments in CBD history – these states were the first to legally recognize CBD despite medical marijuana still being illegal in those states.
  • June 25, 2018 – FDA approves Epidiolex, a CBD drug for epilepsy. The drug is designed for patients with Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome – and it has been shown to reduce seizures enough that a few children have returned to near-normal daily function.
  • December 12, 2018 – The 2018 Farm Bill passes USA Congress, removing hemp from the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and making it officially an “agricultural commodity.” Hemp now legally includes “extracts, cannabinoids, and derivatives.” These two changes mean that CBD legally falls under the category of hemp.
  • December 20th, 2018 – The Farm Bill is signed into law!

CBD research and breakthroughs have come a long way since the 1800s – especially over the last 20 years. We’re can’t wait to see what the future of CBD research holds![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Editor’s Note: This blog was originally published on 8/10/18 & has been updated to include more recent events.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
